Recipients of ARHRF contribution banners for D9550 were presented at the PETS session on Friday by ARHRF Chair Terry Lees. The Banners are awarded to recognise the average contribution per Rotarian in a club based on the total accumulated donations made by that Club.

2008-09_250a.jpgRotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee addressed incoming district governors today at the 2008 International Assembly, urging them to use their resources to help curb child mortality. Lee said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria.

"Once I understood the issues behind that terrible number, I knew what I needed to do," Lee said. He told the incoming governors that Rotary will keep the service emphases of recent years -- water, health and hunger, and literacy -- but asked them to focus their efforts in each of these areas on children.

 

A new look at global ethics

Moral codes and ethics give us tools but also raise questions to be answered: How should we live? What is morally good and bad, right and wrong? Shall we aim at happiness or knowledge? Virtue or the creation of beautiful objects? If we choose happiness, will it be our own or the happiness of all?

 

And what of the more specific questions that face us? Is it right to be dishonest for a good cause? Can we justify living in opulence while elsewhere in the world people are starving? Is going to war warranted in cases where innocent people will likely be killed?

Ethics deals with such questions at all levels. The subject’s core consists of the fundamental issues of practical decision making, and its major concerns include the nature of ultimate value and the standards by which human actions can be judged right or wrong.

District Governor's Newsletter for July

What a year we have had Sharing Rotary under PDG Joanne Schilling. On
behalf of District 9550 I would like to express our thanks to Joanne and
Percy for their commitment and support during 2007-2008. A job very well
done!
 
The start of a new Rotary year always brings fresh enthusiasm to a Club.
The new office bearers are keen to get their programs underway and their
Club working cohesively to fulfill this year’s plans and objectives. 
 
R.I. President D.K.Lee has challenged us all to honour our commitment to
match the Gates Foundation’s $100,000,000 Challenge Grant, reduce
preventable deaths in children and increase Rotary membership by 10%.
