District Governor Elect

Ida Portella

Ida Portella & Geoff Stockall

I was born and raised in Mareeba, to Italian immigrants Angelo and Anna Portella.

After completing my senior education my, father took ill and I decided to take a gap year. In 1982, I started my first fulltime job at Coles Supermarket in Mareeba as a Layby Consultant and during that time I also worked as a DJ at a local nightclub. That year my father passed away and I opted to stay in the workforce. Since then I have worked for a doctor, completed my training as a photo journalist and sales executive for News Ltd and became a qualified youth counsellor and trainer.

It was at this point I had the opportunity to join the travel industry in early 1994 and trained on the job completing a part-time 4 year travel course through the University of Adelaide and received my Diploma in Travel and Tourism.

In 1995, I married my wonderful husband Geoff Stockall; we have no children, however between us we have 12 nieces and nephews, which we adore.

I am presently, co-director of travel experience.com.au, a boutique travel business with offices in Atherton and Mareeba located on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland. I presently employ and manage twelve amazing team members.

In 1997, I was asked to join Rotary by Katrina Mellick who was the first female President of our club. Since joining Rotary I have held positions as Club, Community, International, PR and Membership and was President in 01-02 and in 08-09 and Assistant Governor Group 3, from 2011-2014.

My other passions include drama where I am an active member of the Mareeba Theatre Group. I have been Chair and Director of the Rotary FNQ Field days and am presently Chair of the Mareeba Friends of the FNQ Hospital foundation.

Rotary has given me the opportunity to serve my community and travel abroad on International projects, two things that are very important to me.

I feel honoured to have been selected by my peers to be District Governor from 2016 and 2017 and will give my heart and soul to continue the great work that our District does and has been doing.
